“I ain’t gonna lie, I was a bad kid,” Desiigner tells Rob Markman as they walk around NYC during a new interview for Genius. “I was a hothead, I was in the streets doing dumb shit. I got hit in my hip.”
The bullet changed the course of his life when he was 14—the same age he started rapping.
“It was a little bit of blood. It wasn’t serious. I was in and out. I was in the hospital maybe 10 minutes, 30 minutes, but it was just that moment that really said, ‘mind your business.’ When that happened to me, it just was like I knew I wasn’t supposed to be there.”
“I went from selling everything to saying, ‘I ain’t gonna sell that. Can’t do it.’ It wasn’t working for me, so I was just like, ‘Yo, I’m going to sell my talent.’”
Throughout the rest of the 18-minute interview, Desiigner tells stories about jumping on his friends‘ music as a features artist, sharing snippets of his early music, having “Panda” leak on SoundCloud prematurely, getting into an 11-label bidding war, eventually signing to G.O.O.D. Music, and seeing his single go platinum.

You can watch the full interview above, in which he also took a minute to comment on the negative attention he’s received and explained how he sees it all as a good thing, saying, “even the diss tracks was enhancing ‘Panda.’”
